What to do in or around Miami, Florida?

My sister and her husband are down in Florida (from CO.) and are going to have a free day to do nothing on Wednesday. They are going to the Everglades on day, and the Florida Keys for a couple days. Along with this, they are going to the beaches and boardwalk in Miami...

The day they leave, they don't have anything planned. Sooooo what cool, amazing, unique things are near Miami and/or the Airport in Miami that they can do in a days time....and they can't go very far away from the Airport since they only have about a day.

Thank you soooo much for your answers!!!What to do in or around Miami, Florida?
This is a bit of a tough one. They're not going to find a whole lot around the airport. You don't mention what time their plane leaves on Wednesday and, more crucially, if they are going by taxi or renting their own car.

But, here's a suggestion: There is an area called the Designer District that is about six miles due east of the airport that--more importantly--is tethered to the airport by Interstate 195 (a/k/a, you'll be pleased to know, the Airport Expressway). The Designer District has been around forever, but it really wasn't a big deal for years and years. Then, about 5 years ago or so, it exploded, and has been doing so ever since. It's now one of the neatest window shopping and regular shopping places in town. Real cutting edge for furniture, some art, collectibles, curios, designs, great restaurants, etc.

So, they might want to do that, and then, just jump on the expressway to the airport (the signs are clear). If they like this idea, I'd suggest researching the Designer District before they get there. Also, as with most big cities, heading westbound on that expressway at two in the afternoon is a lot different than at four. And, nighttime shouldn't be jammed up with traffic. BTW, if for whatever reason the interstate isn't accessibe enough, surface street 36th Street is just a few block south of it and parallels it the entire way. Just take 36th street west (it'll change from NE 36th Street to NW 36th Street, but that shouldn't throw them) and hang a left on Lejune Road (42nd Avenue) and the signs will lead you into the airport. (Miami is laid out like a gridiron.) If they take 36th Street, they should be aware that, for a lot of it, they are not traveling through the best neighborhood in town. What to do in or around Miami, Florida?
The Seaquarium is right there downtown, but on Key Biscayne, a direct shot on I 95 to the airport, and Bayside is in the heart of Miami, also a clear shot on I 95 to the airport.
