"The recall [...] of Carlos Alvarez, the Miami-Dade mayor who raised pay and unfroze benefits for public-sector employees, offers a first hint of voter mood amid a massive recall campaign building in Wisconsin.
[...]
"According to a Miami Herald poll, 67 percent of residents wanted Alvarez out, mainly because he raised property taxes for two-fifths of the county's homeowners by 13 percent, while increasing pay and unfreezing some benefits for public-sector employees. The unemployment rate in Miami-Dade County is 12 percent."

Miami-Dade is hardly a Republican stronghold, on the contrary. So, if voters there kicked a tax-raising, public-sector employee friendly Democrat out of office in the middle of his SECOND term, does this mean even Democrats are fed up with tax-and-spend tactics favored by Democrats?
Or is it an indication that it was the wrong time to raise taxes and raise pay for government employees while high unemployment runs rampant?
Or is this just a Miami-Dade thing?
Anybody have some insight I'm not finding in the news reports I have seen?Is Miami-Dade Recall of Mayor Good News?
We told him not to raise taxes 14%, he did not listen. So now he's gone! Lesson learned. Is Miami-Dade Recall of Mayor Good News?
Election 2010 was just the begining. Candidates had better pay attention to what they say and promise. The voters are in a really bad mood and not up to B.S.
Carlos Alvarez is a Republican. Is Miami-Dade Recall of Mayor Good News?
He raised taxes AND gave wage increases. So, I would want him out too.
Yes, it proves our system works and voters do have limits. Is Miami-Dade Recall of Mayor Good News?
No, it means that the situations are different.
In Wisconsin the Governor already got the freezes, in fact he got pay cuts and increased contributions to benefits, so they gave back, even though the governor had just signed tax deductions for businesses and tax breaks for farmers. And of course he didn't mess with the cops and firemens unions.
Not happy with getting the givebacks, Walker then went after the union itself, and that's where he lost people. He overstepped, and in doing so angered them. There are 98,000 teachers in Wisconsin.
there are not 98,000 credentialed teachers to take their place.
The unemployment figures for college grads is 4.1%. Its the overall unemployment rates that nationally are around 9%. That's because we have lost so many factory jobs over the years.
No one likes taxes, but sometimes they are necessary, and if the payrate in Miami-Dade is lower than in surrounding counties then the rise in pay for their workers might be necessary or they might be facing shortages of workers, who can't be replaced by just anyone off the streets.
Not good nor bad. The voters of FL voted for a felon for governor and a right wing uber-extremist for the Senate. You can learn nothing about America by looking at Little Havana, other than the Cubans who swam to America are willing to take away the freedoms from others that they say they came here for. Somehow, the Cubans in Miami want to wage war against Castro means that my sons fight and die and their sons watch on TV.
Thanks, FL, for giving us a Governor who was fined $1.7 BILLION for stealing from the taxpayer and a gutless, freedom-hating Senator.
2012 is coming.
